Welcome Back, Phil! The World Is Waiting. We've Missed You!
As you may or may not know, my husband, Brad, and I watch a lot of crime shows and documentaries, but he doesn’t enjoy “fictional TV” like I do, i.e., #BlueBloods, #GreysAnatomy, and the #OneChicago franchise. But being a newlywed couple, I wanted him to at least try some of my favorite shows, so shortly after we were married, in September 2020, I convinced him to give The Amazing Race a shot.
Now, I don’t watch much reality TV—unless you count classic games shows from the 1980s—but I’ve been a fan of The Amazing Race from the start. And after we watched Season 32, Brad was instantly hooked, so just after Christmas that year, we started watching TAR from the very beginning. Some teams I remembered; others I could’ve sworn I’d never seen before in my life. And surprisingly, with the exception of one season, I didn’t even remember who won the million-dollar prize! Scary.
Some contestants you love from the get-go, others you just love to hate. Being a Blockhead (@NKOTB), I loved seeing Jonathan Knight (@JonathanRKnight) and his now-husband Harley Rodriguez (Congratulations, guys!) compete on Season 26, although I wish they’d made it farther. Having been a fan of Joey “Jaws” Chestnut since he appeared in a book I worked on around 2007, I was chomping at the bit to see the world’s greatest eater and his teammate, Tim Janus, devour the competition in an eating challenge during Season 30, but they were eliminated before getting a chance to nosh on some crunchy scorpions. Since then, Joey has moved to the same town as us. Welcome, @joeyjaws! Brad and I would love to have a drink with you sometime. The same goes for you Alexander Rossi and Conor Daly. Admittedly, I hadn’t heard of you guys before TAR, but you were my pick to win Season 30—even after Conor got stuck during a driving challenge. LOL. It was perfect timing, too, because shortly after the season aired, I met Brad—a huge #IndyCar fan—so I’m sure he was impressed that I knew the names of some current drivers. And now I’m a big fan of the sport too. Naturally, @AlexanderRossi and @ConorDaly22 are two of my favorite drivers.
It took us about a year and a half, but earlier this summer, we finally finished watching every single episode together. Each season, we had our favorite and not-so-favorite teams, and we always discussed what we’d do if we were on the show. Brad’s not a fan of heights, so I always get the height-related challenges—unless it’s bungee jumping. To avoid either of us having to bungee jump, we’d probably take the four-hour penalty. In exchange for me doing the height-related roadblocks, Brad offers to do any eating-related challenges, even if it involves downing a liter of beer, a pound of deep-fried bugs, or a batch of breaded bull testicles. He’s such a great guy!
We’re so excited that Season 34 starts tonight! During our six-week hiatus from TAR, I actually went through withdrawal. On many occasions, Brad would ask, “What do you want to watch tonight?” and I’d respond sorrowfully, “I don’t care. I miss Phil!”
But the wait is over! Tonight, @PhilKeoghan is back with a whole new group of soon-to-be world travelers that we’ll quickly come to love—or not. So be sure to tune in Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. EST on CBS for @AmazingRaceCBS. Did I mention that Brad also does an impressive impersonation of Phil, right down to the raised eyebrow: “The world is waiting for you. Good luck. Travel safe. . . . Go!”
